A practical way to size your first Google Ads budget based on your industry, average deal value, and how much data you need to make a real decision.
There's no single right answer to "how much should I spend on Google Ads" — the honest answer depends on your industry's cost per click, your close rate, and how much a customer is worth to you. But there is a practical way to size a starting budget instead of guessing.
Start with how much data you need
Google's algorithm needs a minimum amount of click and conversion data to optimize a campaign — this is usually referred to as the "learning phase." A budget too small to generate meaningful clicks in 30 days won't give you (or the algorithm) enough to learn from. As a rough floor, most businesses need $1,000–$1,500 a month just to exit the learning phase with usable data.
Work backward from your close rate
If your average customer is worth $2,000 and you close 1 in 5 leads, you can afford to pay up to roughly $400 per lead and still be profitable before accounting for ad spend efficiency gains over time. Multiply your target lead volume by that number to get a budget range — not a guarantee, but a sane starting point that reflects your actual economics rather than an arbitrary number.
Industry CPL varies a lot
Cost per lead on Google Ads ranges enormously by industry — local service businesses often see $20–$100 per lead, while B2B IT services can run $50–$200 or more. E-commerce doesn't map cleanly to a CPL at all since it depends heavily on your conversion rate and attribution model. Treat any CPL benchmark as a planning estimate, not a promise, and validate it against your own campaign data as soon as you have enough spend to be statistically meaningful.
The bottom line
Most businesses see useful signal from $1,000–$5,000 a month depending on industry and competitiveness. Start at a level that can generate enough conversions in 30 days to tell you whether the campaign is working, then scale the budget once you know your real numbers — not before.
