They solve different problems. Here's how to decide which platform fits your business first, and when you'll eventually want both.
Google Ads and Meta Ads often get compared like competing options, but they do fundamentally different jobs. The right starting point depends on how your customers actually find you.
Google Ads captures existing demand
Search ads show up when someone is already typing what they need into Google — "emergency plumber near me," "best CRM for small business." That intent already exists; you're just winning the click. This tends to convert faster because the person is further along in their decision, which is why Google Ads often performs well for high-intent, immediate-need purchases.
Meta Ads creates demand
Facebook and Instagram ads interrupt someone's feed rather than answer a search. Nobody is searching for your product at that moment — you're introducing it. This is a different skill: the creative, the hook, and the targeting matter far more than on Search, because you're competing with cat videos, not other search results. Meta tends to perform better for visual products, impulse-friendly purchases, and building awareness before someone starts actively searching.
How to decide
If your customers already know they need what you sell and search for it — plumbers, lawyers, SaaS tools solving a known problem — start with Google. If your product is something people discover rather than search for — jewelry, home goods, a new app — Meta usually gets you moving faster and cheaper. B2B with a defined buyer role often does best on LinkedIn instead of either.
Most businesses eventually run both
Google Ads catches people when they're ready to buy; Meta Ads builds the audience that becomes ready to buy later. Once one channel is profitable and you understand your numbers, adding the other usually compounds results rather than splitting your budget thin — just don't start both at once before you know your numbers on either.
